Pre-race quotes from Pomona

Compiled by Ian Tocher

Again this year, Drag Racing Online will spend hours poring over countless press releases, interview transcripts, and TV appearances to find the most witty, compelling, funny, and explanatory comments from drag racing's best. Most often, these quotes can tell the whole story of an event, straight from the racer's mouths.

So, here's installment one for 2004, full of hope, goals, and predictions before the season-opening Winternationals revved up in Pomona.

"I can't wait to get back out on the racetrack" -- Clay Millican on starting his 2004 campaign at Pomona

"There's nothing like standing behind a Top Fuel car and see it disappear off into the distance. They're pretty damn exciting." -- Don Prudhomme, former driver and current team owner of Larry Dixon's entry, on watching from the sidelines

"Wins are great, and we want a lot of them, but anything short of winning the
championship would be a let down. We have a one-track mindset for 2004." -- Doug Kalitta setting his goals for this year before the season opener

"To say that I am more excited than ever to begin a season would be a huge understatement." -- David Grubnic on his new assignment as teammate to Doug and Scott Kalitta

"Everybody is tied for first place. It's a clean sheet of paper now. Unless NHRA is going to offer provisionals, we've got to go out and earn our keep." -- Two-time defending Top Fuel champ Larry Dixon on the realities of drag racing as he begins a new season

"My dad (Connie Kalitta, team owner and crew chief) really wants another championship. He doesn't care if it's me or Doug, so we will race heads up." -- Scott Kalitta referring to how he will approach his teammate and cousin in 2004

"I think, for the most part, these test sessions create more confusion than anything else." -- Jimmy Prock, crew chief for Gary Densham, on the team's three pre-season tests before Pomona

"I've haven't changed my opinion in 30 years. I'd rather be racing than doing anything else. I tell people, 'a bad day racing is better than a good day doing anything else.'" -- Densham on his anticipation to get the season started

"We obviously want the dragster to win a third title, but our goal is to get the Funny Cars turned around." -- Prudhomme again, team owner for Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr., on his commitment to do better in the Fuel Coupe ranks this year
