Ford announces Bob Glidden award

Legendary drag racer Bob Glidden was known for a lot of things, but one of the things the Ford racing icon was best known for was his work ethic - the grit and determination of he and his Glidden Family Racing team that made he, his wife Etta, and sons Bill and Rusty, legends in the sport of drag racing.

It's that grit and determination that drove Glidden, who passed away at age 73, to be one of the most dominant racers in the sport, and Ford drag racers with that same spirit will now be honored with a new Bob Glidden "85/10" Award each year.

The "85/10" symbolizes Glidden's Pro Stock victories and championships in NHRA competition during his career which include 85 NHRA victories, 10 NHRA championships, 122 final round appearances and nine U.S. Nationals titles.

"We're proud to introduce this new Glidden '85/10' Award to help honor Ford drag racers who have the same spirit, determination and grit that Bob had," said Doug White, Global Performance Parts Manager, Ford Performance. "There are hundreds of Ford drag racers competing every weekend all over this country and we want to help recognize their efforts, especially those who are long-time competitors like Bob was. This award will help us do that."

A distinguished panel of experts, including Glidden's son Bill and Race Series leaders, will review Ford drag racers each year, with final nominees announced at the SEMA Show in November, and an award winner selected and announced at the PRI Show in December.

Sponsors return to Mid-West Pro Mod Series as season starts

Menscer Motorsports will return as an official series sponsor for the 2018 MWPMS racing season. Menscer Motorsports, based in Fayetteville, NC, is a leading high-performance shock absorber specialist in drag racing today and also a team sponsor to MWPMS owner, promoter and competitor Keith Haney.

Menscer Motorsports plans to attend select MWPMS events this year to exhibit and sell products, as well as offer chassis tuning services, but even at those races not currently on the schedule, company founder Mark Menscer said his products would be available trackside through Keith Haney Racing.

In addition, Atomizer Racing Injectors has been named the official fuel injector sponsor of the series.

A racer himself with a twin-turbocharged 2017 Challenger set up for Radial vs. the World competition, Atomizer owner Jack French is unsure whether he’ll actually compete within the MWPMS this year.

The season-opening Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet North vs. South Frankenstein MWPMS Pro Mod Shootout begins Mar. 1, with qualifying and racing scheduled Mar. 2-3, at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX.

Meet Jennifer Caputo-Armstrong at L.A. Classic Auto Show

Jennifer Caputo-Armstrong of sister publication Mopar Max’s drag racing team will appear along with her race car at The Classic Auto Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center on March 2-4.

Jen made her competition start at the helm of the Liquid Glow 2007 Dodge Magnum at last weekend’s SCEDA race at Fontana, CA, where she made it through the first round of competition on both Saturday and Sunday.

“This race was my fourth round of handicap start bracket racing ever,” said Jennifer. “I’ve been reading about bracket racing strategy, I talked to [crew chief] Richard [Kratz] about strategy, and mentally rehearsed a thousand times in my head all the scenarios that could happen. All the prep was helpful but when it’s all said and done, actually being in a close race and trying to judge the finish line and closure rate was something you have to experience firsthand to actually comprehend. I saw in my side mirror I had the other car beat so tried to ease off at the end but missed it by less than the blink of an eye.” Jennifer broke out by .003 under her dial of 9.82 seconds.

In addition to driving a drag car, Jen has been a stuntwoman in more than 184 films and television series. Fans can get a free poster at the Auto Show and have it autographed Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and Sunday at 12.45 p.m.

Schumacher Motorsports expands to supply sportsman parts

Leah Pritchett at last year’s U.S. Nationals.

For years, Don Schumacher Motorsports (DSM) has been regarded as a leading parts supplier for teams competing in NHRA’s nitro categories. After spending much of the 2017-2018 off-season ramping up its inventory of products, DSM is now branching out to supply NHRA Sportsman racers in its role as a performance parts distributor.

For NHRA Sportsman competitors who race a Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, DSM and Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) have worked in collaboration with Mopar, SRT and BES Racing Engines to offer a variety of parts and components for the modern-day package car, including aluminum HEMI® engine packages that utilize Mopar blocks and heads as building blocks.

DSM will also offer Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak NHRA Factory Stock customers on-site parts support during the seven SAM Tech NHRA Factory Stock Showdown events.

The timing is perfect for Top Fuel star Leah Pritchett, who recently announced she will run the full NHRA Factory Stock Showdown schedule in a DSR-tuned/DSM-equipped Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak.

“DSR is pleased to have a full-time entry in the Factory Stock Showdown in 2018,” said DSR and DSM owner Don Schumacher. “Between Leah’s skill behind the wheel and [crew chief] Kevin Helms’ Mopar expertise, we have high expectations and anticipate Leah to be in championship-contention.
