This is the new age form of changing jets and timing. Super Chips FlashPaq diesel tuner # 1805. Power has never been so easy!

One bit of “Tech” to cover is my recent acquisition of a Super Chips “FlashPaq” tuner (part #1805) for my 2004 Ford F350 Power Stroke diesel tow vehicle. With the price of fuel now OVER $3.00 a gallon I figure it will be a timely bit of testing to hopefully save some fuel and increase towing power and durability. I have been running the truck with the tuner installed and set on the “tow safe” mode for about two months and have been quite pleased with the results. The tuner modifies the factory program making changes to the fuel and timing maps, transmission functions, and allows the user to raise the factory rev limiter, speed limiter, and enter tire diameter to correct the speedometer reading if you have a non-stock tire size. One really cool feature is the ability to hook your FlashPaq tuner up to a PC and via the internet you can download updates or even a custom program from Super Chips. The installation takes about seven minutes to download from the tuner to your vehicle and the

instructions are very easy to follow on the hand held monitor. You answer a few questions pertaining to what level of “tune” you desire and the tuner takes it from there. I currently have the computer programmed to the “tow safe” mode which seems to be a pretty good average between the options available and I have seen an average of 2 mpg better than with the factory Ford settings.

That is an average of towing and non-towing mileage as I use the truck every day for transportation. The engine definitely has a lot more power and laughs at the 9000 lb. load behind it. The transmission also has a noticeable improvement in shift firmness and seems to stay in gear longer when accelerating and also going up a hill. The turbo spools up more and the transmission temperature stays cool.

What more could you want except a stock ownership in a petroleum company? Oh well, I’m still doing my part to make sure the billions in profit’s the oil companies are enjoying don’t go down too much. Just imagine what the price of fuel would be if they were gouging us! They would never do that to there fellow Americans though, right? Once again, I digress.

Next article will have a report on more racing, tow vehicle mileage, and hopefully a clear plan for the future. Remember, there’s always hope and when in doubt…..DO A WHEELIE!
