Volume IX, Issue 10, Page 90

The carb has the normal, (for Demon that is), billet base plate and metering blocks along with a nicely contoured main body feeding into the venturis. It also has the “bling” factor going for it with the nice red venturi sleeves contrasting the golden colored main body. Different sized sleeves have a different color also.

The Hooker Super Comp headers are a tight fit but, they went right in and fit great! I didn't have to dimple a single tube. The shiny ceramic coating not only helps keep the under hood temperature down, but looks good too!

I bolted the Demon to the intake with a 1” billet aluminum open carb spacer made by Wilson Manifolds, (#000010), sandwiched in between. The spacer is a lightweight design that is completely CNC machined and another work of art. As I’m sure you are aware, Wilson Manifolds is a high quality-oriented company that has its intake manifolds and other products on some of the fastest cars in the world. I have two other styles and sizes of carb spacers from Wilson to try and will eventually perform some back to back testing to see what the different styles are worth or more specifically what they do to the power curve of the engine.

Now came the time to install the little bugger, and everything fit as would be expected, considering I removed a 302. The only real change was a set of different solid engine mounts that I got used from a friend, and apparently they were not designed for a stock installed height. After a little fabricating and spacer installing I was able to bolt everything up solid again. I was a little concerned about having enough room in the transmission tunnel to clear the TCI trans shield, (#977000), as it looked quite bulky outside of the car, but I was relieved to find it fit perfectly with a little room to spare.

I did have a slight interference problem between the new Hooker Headers 1 ¾” Super Comp, (#6227-1), collectors and the safety strap of the shield, but it was easily fixed and I will give more detail on that in the future. I will also be covering the complete build up of the C-4 using all TCI internals in another article, so check back for that. TCI makes many more Ford pieces than I was previously aware of and so far it has all been top notch.

Looking good! Runs pretty fair too!

So, how does it run after all this build up, you ask? Pretty stinking good I think! The first time out I was a little cautious about launching on “full kill” with the TCI trans brake, because as much as I enjoy doing big wheelies, I also don’t want to take my car home in pieces! And, as it all transpired, I think I made the right decision by gradually raising the MSD 2-step to the point I felt fairly comfortable I wasn’t going to flip over, which ended up being only a 4600-rpm launch.

At this point I was still using the old Stock Eliminator suspension and setups and Ol’ Muscrate was more than willing to stand up on the balonies! My best run that first weekend was a 10.274 at 129.67 mph with a 1.373 for 60 feet! This was at a corrected elevation of about 2800 ft. I think the 60-foot clocks are tripping with the header collectors just as the front tires touch down because the front tires are definitely not tripping the 60-foot clock!

The “Stocker” setup is just too violent for the new-found power of the 349. Since then, I have removed the old rear suspension and installed a Competition Engineering coil over conversion kit, (#C2055), and tubular lower control arms, (#C8007), with Heim ends. I will cover this installation in detail next month. Suffice it to say, it works! My new best times as of this writing are 10.173 at 132.88 mph with a 1.356 60-ft! This was at about 2500 ft. corrected.

In one of the first articles this year, I said that I was going to keep my expectations of the new combo to myself for awhile, just to build the suspense, you know? Well, I really want to make some 9-second passes before the season ends. I still have not even touched the jetting of the Demon, or tried different ignition timing! It is at a rock steady 35 degrees. Bring the good cool Fall air and I will see the 9’s! That is my mission. Until next time... Remember, there is always hope. And, when in doubt... DO A WHEELIE!
