1/8 mile racing is so much less expensive, the difference in maintenance between Paducah and Cordova is significant.
Less parts, fuel, crew, oil downs, faster programs, lower ETs compare better to Big Show cars.
Lower cost might attract more cars; we're trying to put a funny car together and the more affordable it is the more likely it is to happen.
Stands at small tracks don't go past 1/8 mile, most damage comes after 1/8 mile.
Might make more tracks possible.
I don't think fans would miss the piston smoke, and racers won't miss having to change pistons and sleeves.
Pro Mods filled the void when Funny Car match racing got too expensive and most Pro Mods race 1/8 mile.
What you said about 1/8th mile racing is right on. It is why I like it so much, because you can see who leaves first and who crosses the finish line.
Jeff: In your “Burk’s Blast” column, you prove time and time again that you are simply a spectator with little care or compassion for the real racers when you make a statement that all of NHRA’s bracket classes should be changed to 1/8 mile to speed-up the program of the national events.
The vast majority of sportsman racers have literally grown-up racing 1/4 mile, NOT 1/8 mile. I, as a Stock Eliminator racer realize that most fans, like yourself, could care less about “bracket cars” because they don’t explode engines in huge fireballs or run on nitromethane, but the fact is you are again trying to changes rules without having to personally suffer the consequences.
The sportsman racers are racing for their own enjoyment, pure and simple. We know the fans will leave the stands once the pros are done and NHRA has done little to help the problem.
In the future, please try to put yourself in the shoes of the racer and try to be less of a “Monday Morning Quarterback”.
