JOY PERHAPS SHORT-LIVED

YES! YES! YES! Apparently my constant letters to ESPN2 paid off. Marty Reid is back! I even wrote them a note today to thank them for listening. Marty knows and loves the sport and, more importantly, knows how to talk about it. Paul Page just had too steep of a learning curve. I wish him well somewhere else.

Steve, we hate to burst your bubble but Marty being at Memphis is just part of the rotation ESPN2 announced at the beginning of the season. Page does the races that don't conflict with Marty's IRL race schedule. That's the bad news. The good news is that Marty will do the rest of the races this year but in all probability Page will return in 2007.

SINGING THE PRO MOD MEMPHIS BLUES

So if the Pro Mod group in NHRA did not already know they are unwanted, the Memphis Monday blues sure punched them in the eye. All other classes finished Monday but not the PRO MOD group or at least none was reported by NHRA.com. Nice work NHRA...

It is just an “exhibition class” for NHRA and not considered a real part of their program.

VALVOLINE GOES GOLFING

Having read your bit on Valvoline dropping sponsorships it is interesting to note that Tiger Woods’ caddy, Steve Williams, has shed his caddy's bib on the last hole to display the Valvoline logo to share his boss’s glory in winning the past two "Majors" [British Open and the PGA].

Maybe the folks at Valvoline have realised that there is more world wide exposure here for less, not that Williams would come that cheap as he is reported to have earned nearly a million already this year and is one of New Zealand's highest paid sportsmen.

A sign of things to come?
