A VOICE OF EXPERIENCE

Jok, I have been racing for 44 years and I agree with your comments. As for the delay device, that has been going on for years, especially by the rich and famous, I call them. When the delay box was outlawed several years ago, the racers that voted against them were racers that were already using something else by then and they surely wanted the boxes outlawed and they got their wish, and those that voted against the box have dominated our sport every since. Oh sure, every now and then a true sportsman racer will win a race, but not as often as a professional touring sportsman.

I am all for the delay box myself, you will see a lot closer racing in every eliminator, Stock through Comp. The guys against the box think it's an automatic winner…hahaha, they have never used one I guess.

I could go on and on, but you have hit the nail on the head, my friend.

SOME SUGGESTIONS

Just a note to let you know I agree with your statements regarding sportsman racing. I have been involved in championship drag racing since 1964. I look around the pits and am amazed at the number of pro rigs and cars that are in attendance at divisional races.

THE COST OF SPORTSMAN RACING IS OUT OF CONTROL. More importantly though I would like to see what can be done to stop racers from locking up the brakes at the finish line. My sons and I run the NHRA & IHRA Division 4 Top Sportsman series races and have seen too many finish line crashes this year. At No Problem Raceway earlier this year a super comp racer had to have his rollcage cut off so he could be removed from the car and later died from his injuries. At Ennis this past weekend there were so many finish line crashes that completion of the race was delayed til Monday.

IT’S TIME TO MAKE SOME CHANGES TO THE RULES. THE SANCTIONING BODIES NEED TO CONSIDER IMPLEMENTING SOME OF THE FOLLOWING PROPOSALS.

1. DROP ALL INDEXES 1 FULL SECOND

2. BAN ALL THROTTLE STOPS

3. INSTITUTE MINIMUM & MAXIMUM MPH FOR EACH INDEX CLASS

4.REQUIRE HANS TYPE DEVICES FOR ALL DRIVERS COMPETING IN CLASSES WHERE    SPEEDS EXCEED 175 MPH

5. 1 YEAR SUSPENSION & FORFITURE OF POINTS OF DRIVER THAT CRASHES BECAUSE OF LOCKING UP THE BRAKES

6. SUSPEND DRIVER/CAR OWNER THAT LOCKS UP THE BRAKES CAUSES DAMAGE TO ANOTHER RACECAR TILL THEY COMPENSATE OTHER CAR OWNER/DRIVER FOR DAMAGES OR INJURIES.

Something needs to be done to get back to racing the way it is supposed to be. Cars running 8.90 at 180 mph is ridiculous. Comp cars running a second under their index is also ridiculous. This also applies to Stock and Super Stock. Let’s see what can be done to encourage racers to tune their cars to run the number and cut a light rather than running to the finish line and hammering the brakes.
