FIA Pro Modified

FIA Pro Modified is going to be simply huge this season with the opening round attracting 27 pre-entries and 25 actually challenging for spots in the 16-car field. At the end of abbreviated qualifying, Urban ‘Ubbe’ Johansson sat nicely on top of the pile with a 6.226/230.29 (the latter good enough for a new Euro TS record) in his Tim McAmis Corvette. Will Ubbe be taking a second title back to Gotland in 2008?

Taking full advantage of the big cubic inches on offer to the nitrous cars, Roger Johansson used his experience on the JEGS Pro Mod Challenge, chassis tweaks by Jerry Haas and a 830ci mill from Gene Fulton to crack off a nice pair of low 6.3s to put the Molndal Speedshop entry in 3rd spot in qualifying and then dropped a 6.287/222 pass in the aborted first round of eliminations.

The Lindahl Brothers are probably favourites to crack the five-second barrier in Europe, although a brief flutter of excitement in the opening qualifying when a 5.967 flashed up on the scoreboards suggested they might have done it, but the terminal speed was suspiciously low at 229.24 mph and a 0.661 60-foot on a red light start demonstrated the rear wheel trip of the lights. It will probably take a season or two yet, but when these times are recorded for real in Europe, the Kendall-backed Camaro will be somewhere close by.
