xceeding all expectations, the first annual Muscle Car Reunion and Nostalgia Drags drew plenty of response from across the Midwest. Held at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois, the MCR attracted more than five hundred entries and a tremendous number of nostalgia-seeking fans for a nearly perfect weekend of racing. Although a violent thunderstorm cut short the final nighttime qualifying session, the majority of the meet was conducted in sunny eighty-degree conditions.
Along with a wide variety of quarter-mile competition classes, the MCR included a huge car show and a massive Legends of Speed display in the pit area which included “Big Daddy” Don Garlits and his first 426 Hemi-powered dragster, “Swamp Rat VIII“, Roland Leong and driver Larry Reyes with Greg Mosley’s restored version of their 1970 “Hawaiian” Dodge Charge AA/FC, Diane Sox with Clark Rand’s collection of Sox & Martin MoPars, Helen Gibb, the wife of fabled Chevy Performance entrepreneur late Fred Gibb, and an impressive array of restored drag racing machinery.
The event also included three different nostalgia Funny Car divisions, the Geezer Gassers circuit, nostalgia Super Stockers and a well-received appearance by the Factory-Appearing Stock Tire (FAST) muscle car group. The open competition categories featured everything from AA/Fuel Altereds to street-legal classics. Here, then, is “the rest of the story”.
