Lots of Fords, Lots of Fun!
Fun Ford’s annual trek to Virginia Motorsports Park has always brought some great racing to the Old Dominion – and the June 23-24 weekend was no different. Fans got to witness the conclusion of the rained out Atlanta event in Pro and Renegade as well as the normal time trials, qualifying and eliminations for the Richmond race. It was a bonus race within a race and the fans showed their appreciation by giving the facility one of its biggest crowds of the year.
Pro was a very special affair at this event with 6-second, 200+ mph passes with nearly every pair that went down the track. Burt Kelkboom, from Aruba, knocked off Frank Snellings, and Dan Seamon got by Dan Saitz while Alex Viscardi and Steve Assenmacher singled their way into the next round. The highlight of the first round, however, was the battle between defending Pro champ David Schorr and 2003 champ Tony Gillig, who was behind the wheel of John Nobile’s car while he was away on family business. The pair left the starting line glued together, but by mid track Gillig started pulling away. In the end, it was Gillig with a 6.454/217.42 victory over Schorr’s 6.640. Gillig’s run turned out to be low ET and Top MPH of the day.
In round two of Pro, Kelkboom (shown above) posted a 6.57/214.48 victory over an ever improving Alex Viscardi while Steve Assenmacher won the coin toss to gain yet another single. Tony Gillig, on the other hand, had another big obstacle in the form of number three qualifier Don Seamon. Gillig cut a good light and needed it, as Seamon was just .001 of a second behind. When the dust had cleared, the scoreboards showed Gillig with a 6.501 to 6.575 victory.
