ALCOHOL FUNNY CAR

For the defending Alcohol Funny Car World Champ and points leader going into the event this race was a complete disaster. Rob Atchison not only inexplicably didn’t qualify, but when he came in on the break rule and could have helped his cause, he shook the tires and lost to Frederick Tigges, guaranteeing arch-rival and five-time IHRA Champ Mark Thomas the points lead and probably the IHRA World Championship.

Thomas defeated Tom Carter and Larry Dobbs, gaining more points with each round for the right to meet former Altered racer Neal Parker in the finals. Parker, known as a serious “leaver,” put a.006 light on Thomas whose .094 light spelled defeat for him. His 5.773/247.20 lap wasn’t close to enough to catch Parker’s 5.841/240.04.
“This feels great,” Parker said. “It’s been six years since we’ve won a national event and that was in Pro Outlaw. To have a small budget team and be able to pull it out for the team, and do it on a holeshot, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
TOP STOCK

Bo Kenney won the Top Stock world championship run-off by defeating Monty Bogan Jr. Kenney lost traction off the starting line but Bogan crossed the center after a big wheelstand. Kenney was awarded the $40,000 prize, the biggest single payout of the weekend.
