From just up the road in Perry, GA, Michael Reece (left) brought his 1937 Chev and qualified fourth with a 4.430-seconds pass. He shook the tires early in the first round, though, allowing Tom Stringer to advance.

After qualifying fifth, Parrish, FL’s Rick Davis (right) lined up against Crump in the opening round of eliminations. His car darted wildly off the start, however. “It just blew the tires off and I went for a ride. It got to within about a foot of the wall right there. That gets your attention.”

Robert Mathis struggled with his 1994 Lumina at Valdosta. He broke on the line and missed making his first qualifying pass, then went only 5.007 in his second attempt, leaving him on the outside looking in.

In his first visit to the south-Georgia strip, Rural Retreat, VA’s W.K. Smith qualified his 1982 ‘Vette sixth, then lost in round one to Davis. “I upped the nitrous when I found out I had to run Ronnie Davis. I had a fender on him at half-track, but he got me at the end with a little bit bigger motor.”

David Helton made the long tow down from Eubank, KY, but missed getting his ’92 Trans Am into the eight-car field. “These guys are tough,” he said. “I may have to wait until I get a little bit bigger motor to run with them.”
