Herman Sheppard didn’t qualify, (a 4.30/178 best), but it’s only a matter of time before the Chuck Ford horsepower matches the intensity of the paint.

After regrouping from dual carnage at the ADRL Valdosta opener, Mississippi’s Bubba Stanton again worked double duty at Madison with both the nitrous Grand Am, (a 4.40/164 best), and
the Stingray, (4.28/170 best) missing the shows.

This run, the maiden voyage shot of Pat Stoken’simmaculate new McAmis-built ‘68 Z28, came with Shannon Jenkins at the wheel and a 4.20/175
timeslip; the Montana pilot was at the helm for the two 4.16s clocked in qualifying and just before its first-round guardwall meeting against Johnny Pilcher.

Quain Stott was as pumped with his career-best 3.93 in the semis as he was with making the final round. The LeeBoy Paving crew made three test hits, then clocked 4.00, 3.96, 4.03, 3.93, and 3.95...all at over 185 mph!

The street-tired Mustang of Todd Tutterow once again hit the threes, (a 3.96/187 in the second qualifying session), but the PSI-huffed smallblock lost the closest race of the event, a 4.021/
185 to
4.020/182 holeshot by John Lynam, by a mere seven thousandths of a second.

The stunning Bickel-built ‘04 Stratus of Ray Vettel made a rare appearance outside of MoPar-only events. The Nebraskan has been a Dodge bracket killer for years but his blown KB-powered masterpiece, complete with unusual collecter headers, is now tough in heads-up racing, too.
Eddie Ware’s 4.05 fell to Joey Martin’s 4.02 in the first pair of eliminations but the Georgian’s Willys qualified at 3.99/184 to prove his ‘06 combination is for real.
When ADRL president Kenny Nowling allowed NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster hitter Jeff Wilson to make runs in his new Monte Carlo alky FC during testing, he wasn’t prepared for the angry mob of Pro Extreme racers who demanded an answer to the question, “What the hell is THAT doing here?”. Nowling calmly responded. “Hey! It’s a ‘No Rules’ race, remember?”. The best part of the joke was that Nowling didn’t tell them otherwise for several hours. The worst part of the joke was that Wilson still wouldn’t have been competitive with Scruggs.
