West Virginia’s Kenny Rucker benefited from the ADRL’s decision to increase the Pro Nitrous field from eight to 16 cars. After slotting in at 15th place, Rucker made it all the way to the semis, where he fell to eventual race winner Harold Martin. “It was much better than I expected,” he said. “I really wasn’t even expecting to qualify, to be honest, so to get down to four cars I’m real happy with that.”

The consummate outlaw, Hugh Scott (far lane), also got into the Pro Extreme field as an alternate after Phil Osborne broke. Also, Toney Russell (near lane) ran a personal best 3.983 in qualifying his 1955 “Lowmad” wagon in the ninth position.

Track photographer Phil Hubbard captured a great shot of Palmer’s ‘Vette just before having to abandon his post as it hit the wall in front of him.
