6.0 INDEX
In his first ORSCA appearance, Chris “The Dog” Bumgardner (right) paced the 24-car 6.0 field with a 6.003-seconds pass at 112.65 mph. The Stanley, NC, driver had trouble in eliminations, though, making a pair of nine-second runs in his rebel-rousing ’69 Firebird before it caught up to him in round three against Lebron Hill and his ’68 Camaro.

Glenn Dutton (left and top left) catches some major air with his’67 Camaro during Saturday’s first qualifying session. The inevitable return to earth bashed in the oilpan of the nitrous-assisted, 572 cubic incher, bent both headers, poked a hole in the hood with the carb, bent the steering wheel, and Dutton suspected suspension damage, too. His weekend was done with the Camaro, but the Gainesville, GA, racer also campaigns a wheelstanding ’62 Nova in the 5.30 class and reached the second round of eliminations with it.

![]() Things looked bleak for David Harvey Jr. Friday night after severely breaking the engine in his 1984 Trans Am, but a late night thrash to replace it with the small block from good friend Bobby Miller’s 7.0 Nova got him back in the mix. Harvey proceeded to qualify 13th in 6.0 and his father said their biggest problem was slowing it down enough to run the index. Harvey lasted until round three on raceday, when he redlighted against eventual winner Pete Rickerson. |
Number-five qualifier Pete Rickerson (near lane) overcame a .057 holeshot by Charles Richards Jr. in the 6.0 final to take the win. Rickerson’s 6.061 nipped the 6.119 posted by 15th-place starter Richards in his father’s ‘55 Chevy by the slimmest of margins. “My shifter tore up and it didn’t make the last shift,” Richards explained. “So I reached over to grab it and let off the gas and the guy passed me. It was real tight, one thousandth margin of victory.”
Despite going out in the first round after qualifying 10th with his 454-equipped '95 Camaro, Alma, GA's Michael Strickland (below) held on to win the 2006 Industrial Depot 6.0 championship.
