"Beach City Corvette" First Look!

Richard Stannard and his talented Estrus Racing crew have their replica of the famed “Beach City Corvette” nitro funny car complete, but still putting the finishing touches to the beauty.  The Estrus team has been working on the new flopper for over a year and hurried to get it together for the 50th March Meet debut.

Drivers such as Pat Foster, Gary Gabelich, Ron Goodsell and Mike Snively drove the original topless Vette back in the 70’s when it was sponsored by Beach City Chevrolet in Long Beach, CA.

This candy red “Beach City Corvette” will be driven by Ed Schwarz.

Sometimes getting here a day early pays off, this car dazzles!

The Estrus guys paid special attention to all the details of the original Don Kirby-built “Beach City Corvette” from period photos and magazine articles.  Details right down to the 4-port Hilborn injector and hand formed and polished scoop.

"Bomb Squad" N/FC

Weekend testing at Famoso Raceway brought out another new funny car debut… Don Nelson’s “Bomb Squad” ’73 Plymouth Duster sporting an Alan Johnson Nitro Hemi, tuned by nitro veteran Donnie Couch.

However, after a number of attempts, new car bugs with the Victory Race Cars chassis will prevent the beautiful Kenny Youngblood-designed flopper from making a competition debut at the March Meet with rookie funny car driver Andrew Berry still needing to complete his licensing.

"Boneshaker" N/FC

Len McLaughlin brought his newly completed “Boneshaker” Corvette Nitro Funny Car for weekend testing at Famoso, unfortunately engine problems sidelined McLaughlin on this burnout, it’s doubtful he’ll be back with this Chevy big block-powered entry for the 50th March Meet.

Famoso Raceway Garages

There have been some improvements to Auto Club Famoso Raceway over the winter months and one of them you’ll see as you enter the pit gate.  These are new garages for rent, one will be used by the California Highway Patrol and Kern County Sheriff’s office for their Officer high-speed training classes and one will be used by a local high school for a project drag car.  Track Manager Blake Bowser says the other garages will be to house racecars for owners who’d like to keep their cars closer to the track.
