MEMORIAL DAY, MOTHERS DAY AND MEMORIES!
The month of May brings warmer weather, lots of racing, celebrations, remembering fallen war veterans who have served in the armed forces to maintain our freedom, and honoring mothers from around the world. Memorial Day is much more than a three-day weekend that marks the beginning of summer. To many people, especially the nation's thousands of combat Veterans, this day, which has a history stretching back all the way to the civil war, is an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country. Memorial Day weekend is one of the largest weekends of the year for racing with the Indianapolis 500 taking place. Do not forget that the Indianapolis 500 would not be possible without the veterans who have given up their lives to protect our freedom. Unless you have traveled outside the United States, it is not possible to truly understand the freedom Americans posses.
Another holiday that is celebrated during May is that of Mothers Day.
Mothers Day is the day when mothers around the country are honored for their dedication to their families and children. During my college and adult years my mother’s words have guided me of what I should do in almost every situation. I am very fortunate to have a wonderful teacher such as my mother to develop me into the person I am today. It was not until I became a mother that I truly understood the dedication, joy, and sacrifices that are part of being a mother. One of my greatest joys and achievements of my life has been that of motherhood. Now for memories this month we are all remembering Eric Medlen and thinking of his family and John Force Racing as they cope with this loss. In NHRA Division 2 many of the racers are coping with the loss of Larry Conner from Oviedo, Florida. Larry and his son Ed Conner were members of the J.W. Performance transmissions race team and supporters of D.R.A.W. As the racing season continues my thoughts will be with Conner and Medlen families.
During the month of May remember to pay tribute to veterans, mothers, and to the loved ones whom you miss so much. Read more in next month’s column about the annual D.R.A.W. auction that will take place during the NHRA Torco Racing Oil Nationals held in Joliet, Illinois, on Saturday, June 9, and help D.R.A.W. pay tribute to the fallen drag racers who have passed away during the act of drag racing.
