Who picked this assignment?
I just love "assignments." Nothing I like more than being told what to write about. I should be happy. I usually wait until a day or so past deadline to stay up all night, thrash some words together between yelling (okay, screaming) at Thing One and Thing Two to go to sleep! Of course the sounds echo off the expansive, Hearst-like mansion walls and scare them into slumber-esque submission. Sometimes. Oh, and this probably isn't the proper place to mention that I asked the hottie from Child Protective Services out for coffee after her last late night visit.
Before I delve into my "assignment" (I think I'm going to like messing with that word), let us talk about my summer so far shall we?
Smelly people. They haunt me...especially on airplanes. I have done quite a bit of flying this summer. A couple of match races ("Scab Tour," if you're keeping score) and some other race-related field trips. At first, I thought the ever occurring stench on every flight was from me. I realized that no, I don't have gingivitis, I try to bathe periodically, I own and am not afraid to use deodorant, and, I didn't have the pastrami and sauerkraut breakfast plate before boarding.
How do the NHRA pros do it? They fly 23 or more weekends a year and I complain about five in a summer. Forget earplugs, I need nose plugs. What do I need to do to get some nice smelling coed or even a screenwriting wannabe metrosexual to sit next to me? Am I forever doomed to sit next to your retired high school gym teacher?
Without further ado, the assignment! As a racer, Pro and Sportsman alike, you might have received an email from me asking a few questions. The two big questions I asked were:
Would the Nostalgia racers support a five race series in 2008 with stops at Famoso, Salt Lake, Boise and others?
And what purse structure would they be willing to run for? (I botched the question for one group and asked what round money they would want. Sorry)
Those were the easy questions, but they also had me ask a third question that got me a lot of flack and that I would never have asked on my own because I know and support the popular answer. Yeah, I was set-up, but I asked anyway:
Would the Funny Cars be willing to run for less than Top Fuel?
So what were the answers? The results were not earth shattering by any means. Both the Pros and the Sportsman racers overwhelmingly said, yes, they would support a series. I guess I can break it down…
Pros: 99% yes in support of a series. (The No votes would like to revisit the rules in effect now.)
Sportsman: 92% yes in support of a series.
