Next up is the long-awaited debut of one of the two cars that Steve Pluegar has built for the nostalgia funny car wars. The first one to hit the track is the Bucky Austin-owned and driven Plymouth Arrow. Its debut will be at the NHRA Northwest National Open at Seattle’s Pacific Raceway. This is a big weekend for Bucky as he sponsors the event and gets to debut his nostalgia funny car. I’m not sure if he’s running his alcohol car also, but if he is, I’m thoroughly impressed with his multi-tasking skills. Can I add a note to my publisher that my column is late because of Bucky? I’m awaiting a phone call from Pluegar on the weekend’s results and if Burk has any concerns he should talk to Pluegar or Bucky. Let’s move on while I await that phone call…
Something else I mentioned last time was the Nostalgia Nitro Shootout that was held at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California on April 21st. I complained that it was a day race. Well, forget I said that! The event was well attended by both racers and fans alike and (at least publicly) my only complaint is with Mother Nature. I left the sprawling Utterback Estates in Santa Monica at 6 a.m. on race day. Not a cloud in the sky, beautiful. As soon as I hit the San Gabriel Valley it was overcast and stayed like that all day. Can I ask that we build a track closer to the ocean in Southern California? There was so much backstage drama with this event, it made a Van Halen reunion with David Lee Roth seem like a walk in the park. Watch the message boards for this to unfold. It’s funny in a train wreck kind of way. For what it’s worth, it was a fun event that didn’t take three days to conclude, and I think that for that fact alone, we should all be grateful. Let’s hope the facility can work out the noise issues (again) with the upscale community next door so we can do this again sometime soon. (Snicker snicker)
Okay kids! Just got off the phone with Steve Pluegar. There’s a new sheriff in town, folks. Steve innocently gave me the incremental numbers from the one 1000 foot pass they made at Bucky’s event. The E.T. was a 6.13 at 171 mph. The other numbers given to me were out of this world (not sure if they were for public consumption, but if you’d like to know them, shoot me an email and maybe I’ll give ‘em to you…Muahahah!) in a good way? Say hello, folks, to the new kings of the class!
Just wondering (where have you heard that before?), do ya’ll think that some private message boards may be allowing people with questionable intentions to join and post just to stir the pot and raise the hit count? Does this hurt the site’s street cred? As of late, they seemed to have opened the floodgates, so to speak, and it’s a free for all. I guess when I start my site, I can police who can and can’t post.
Finally, it’s with a heavy heart that I must mention the recent passing of Tomiko Robinson, wife of “Big Willie” Robinson. She was the “President Assistant” of the Brotherhood of Street Racers. Together, the Robinsons promoted a couple of very successful nostalgia races at their Terminal Island, California facility. Their track was where the recreated Winged Express made its maiden voyage. Rest in peace, Tomiko.
