One performance related topic that has been mentioned numerous times is disparity between qualifying times and dial ins. There is no rule governing dial ins, so the norm for some racers is to step on their combo’s to get higher on the qualifying list and get the points, then back their cars down and run significantly slower dials. It only seems fair to make competitors dial no more than a tenth off their qualifying time.
A few other notes on the classes:
-
Top end dumping. I think the Division Directors need to be very stringent on top end dumping. It can be a problem in any class, but at the speeds these cars are going, excessive braking in the lights can put both racers at risk. This needs to be policed even harder than the other classes.
-
Increased demand. Racers in Pro Stock, Pro Mod and the alcohol categories are loving the rapid growth of the TD and TS classes. It is giving them a much bigger outlet for their used parts and cars.
The ultimate TD project:
We all have our dream cars we want to build. I’ve dreamed up the “perfect” TD that could have many different venues to race in.
The project car would start with a used TAFC chassis. To run in TD, it would be skinned in an altered type body. The motor would come from used Top Alky Hemi components with a used Hi-Helix 14-71. Despite being able to run a clutch with an altered, the Lencodrive unit would be the drive train of choice.
My thoughts on this combo. One, it should run mid sixes without ever stepping on it, and quicker if you wanted it to and had the budget. Being an altered, you could also run several heads-up series, like the Outlaw Fuel Altereds in my neck of the woods (Texas).
Since it was built on a TAFC chassis with Hemi components, if one desired and had the budget in place, it would be fairly easy to make the jump. The key would be buying the right building blocks so as not to have to buy new core components to make the switch. In theory someone could make such a switch by making a blower and body change, along with some fuel system and gearing mods.
Along those same lines, someone could do the same with a dragster chassis or TS if they started with the right building blocks.
