VIVA LAS VEGAS II

Las Vegas Motor Speedway, 2011:  Hannah Rickards captured this stellar shot of the gateway to the Strip!  Front line NHRA action will return here April 1-2-3 with the Summit Racing Las Vegas Nationals.

Eleven months have passed since we brought you ‘Viva Las Vegas’, and during this time, quite a collection of material about drag racing in the area has poured into our office.  In this column we will attempt to provide a better history of the Henderson drag races of the late ‘50s & early ‘60s; plus reveal another ‘LAS VEGAS DRAG STRIP’,  as well as showcase racers from this area, and ‘stars’ who raced here over the years.

When Dalby Shirley was manager of the Henderson Drag Strip during the late ‘50s, the track was a Nellis AFB Auxiliary runway from WWII. Access to the site was granted by the Henderson City Hall Recreation Department, to give young people a place to race. Once the races became popular, additional advertising and prize money was needed and the new Thunderbird Hotel on the highway to Los Angeles came to the rescue.

We will also bring you up to date information on long time drag racer, Cliff Findlay and his citywide group of autodealerships, their sponsorship in 2011 of the current Pro Stock World Champion, and the Findlay Olds SpecialTop Fuel Car of 1964!
