Just Wondering...When I wrote my column about the changing of the NHRA president and talked about Tom Compton's accomplishments during his presidency how could I have forgotten that he also was responsible for the professional Pro Modified class coming to the NHRA? That singular deed guarantees his place in the history of the NHRA. In my opinion he accomplished that feat despite a great deal of reluctance and pushback from his staff. Thanks for the effort, Tom!
Just Wondering ... Is a full-on professional bracket racing racecar the most complicated race car in drag racing.
Just Wondering ... Why doesn't the NHRA management take more advantage of the RPM Pro Mod group to sell tickets and attract sponsors?
Just Wondering ... What is it going to take for the NHRA management to realize that Pro Mod is the only pro class they have currently that is growing both in size and popularity? Pro Mod is the only new thing the NHRA has to offer and they seem determined to make sure the class never becomes popular with fans or the TV audience. In my opinion NHRA's Pro Mod class is the original extreme motorsports class!
Just Wondering ... Did you know that part of their contract with the NHRA requires the RPM group to deliver a $50,000 sponsorship for all ten of their races? And if they can't get a sponsor the RPM group itself pays the $50,000.
Just Wondering ... With all of the rained out races the IHRA has suffered this season will they be forced to look at their purses for some of their pro classes? I think they have to look at the possibility.
Just Wondering ... Did anyone but me notice that the live coverage of the Norwalk NHRA event the camera showed just one side of the grandstands for the whole show? Maybe there were too many empty seats in the opposite grandstands for TV?
Just Wondering ... When will one of the current NHRA Pro Mod racers build a car that the Sport Compact crowd and industry can identify with? I'd bet a Pro Mod based on a 2010 or later Sport Compact body using a turbocharged engine might be able to get the racer a built-in fan base and perhaps sponsorship from the Sport Compact racing fans.
Just Wondering ... What does the fact that Norwalk Raceway Park's management team -- whose success at selling tickets is legendary among drag strip promoters -- couldn't fill up their grandstands despite absolutely perfect weather and full professional fields mean? Will similar weather and ticket sales for races at Bristol and IRP finally convince the NHRA and their track partners that ticket prices are just too high for the entertainment offered? Will the tracks and the NHRA finally admit the current business plan is broken and they need to take drastic measures? I wish it were so, but I doubt it.
