IT'S A 'SUPER CHEVY' GIRL!

Check out the butterflies on Cathy Belcher's 1990 Camaro and there's no mistaking who's behind the wheel. Belcher became the first woman to compete in the Nitro Coupe class at this past weekend's Super Chevy Show at Atlanta Dragway, where she qualified 5th with a 6.76 at 205 mph.

"We just wanted to make sure the girl didn't qualify 8th," the Rantoul, IL-based mother of two said. When her husband, "Doc," said 12 years ago that he'd rather tune than drive, Belcher had never driven faster than freeway speed, but decided to give racing a try. "I love it now," she added. After taking over the reins of his '57 Nomad bracket racer, Belcher advanced to a rear-engined dragster and finally to this G Force-built Camaro in which she ran a career-best 6.56/208 at a Top Sportsman event at Route 66 Raceway near Chicago earlier this year. Unfortunately, a redlight start in the first round put an early end to her day at Atlanta. "That's okay," she said. "We had a great time and hopefully they'll invite us back."  (Ian Tocher photo)  [6-5-2006]
