Wayne Taylor and Keoki Desa opened the 2018 Southern California Drag Racing Assoc. season with double victories on Feb. 24 and 25 at Auto Club Dragway. Taylor won twice in the DNB Engineering-Calvert Racing Stock/Super Stock class, while Desa doubled in the thirteen and older junior class. Near-perfect weather made for great racing and excellent participant turnout.

Taylor went to the final round of the first race with round wins over Lonnie Cox Jr and Cliff Hanson before getting a bye into the final. Brett Brown, the 2014 SCEDA Stock/SS champion, went to the final with wins over Tom Ferruggia, Doug Gibson, and Johnny Calvert. Taylor’s ’99 Chrysler Sebring had a .005 advantage over Brown off the line and held on for a 10.545 second (10.50 dial) win to Brown’s .003 too quick Chevy Chevelle.

The Sunday Stock/Super Stock eliminator saw Taylor and racing partner Ken Etter (near lane) go to the final, with Taylor taking a .003 reaction time advantage and 10.558 (10.57 dial) double-breakout win over the defending series champion, losing with a 10.290 (10.32 dial).

Greg Hicks has found a lot of success at Auto Club Dragway this season, as he won the K&N 890 series race earlier in the month, and he went to two finals at the SCEDA race, winning the Meziere Electronics Super Pro competition in race #1 and finishing runner-up on Sunday.

Saturday’s semifinals saw Hicks defeat Scotty Keough and Ray Medrano beat Elliot Franco. Hicks took the event win when Medrano could not make the call. On Sunday, Jason Rosenbaum got the win with an 8.934 time as Hicks broke out.

Bobby Mirizio came one win-light short of a weekend sweep in the Champion Transmission Sportsman class, defeating Amanda Shelder on Saturday, but lost a double-breakout race to Nick Van Horn on Sunday.

Tony Pellettera rode his Suzuki motorcycle to a final round win in race one, while C.W. Hoefer beat Steve Hannawcker’s ’55 Chevy in the Sunday afternoon final.

The Terminator Blocks, Clutches, and Accessories SCEDA Junior action was highlighted by a double win by Las Vegas racer Keoki Desa, as he defeated Haley Morris in Saturday’s final, and Brandon Geers in the Sunday 13 years and older final.

Carlie Ball was one win-light short of a double, defeating Jake Hodges in the Sunday final, but losing to Chase Crandall in the Saturday 6-9-year-old final round. Dylan Hegwood went to two 10-12-year-old finals over the weekend, losing to Caden Ball on Saturday and Macie Gordon on Sunday.

The 2018 SCEDA race season resumes at Auto Club Dragway on June 16-17.
