No shortage of Pro Mods at Gators

Troy Coughlin will not be at Gainesville, having retired as champion.

With other classes being short of entries or just making the 16-car quota, the Pro Mods have plenty of competition for their season opener at the NHRA Gatornationals: there are 35 cars entered.

Bounty Hunters No-Prep Nationals this weekend

San Antonio Raceway will host the Bounty Hunters No-Prep Nationals III on March 9-10. The event will draw outlaw racers including Kye Kelly, Birdman, Mike Murillo, and Steve Wiley (Grim Reaper) vying for over $70,000 in payouts.

New patriotic look for John Force’s Funny Car at Gators

John Force will race a fan designed PEAK Antifreeze and Coolant Chevrolet Camaro SS at the upcoming NHRA Gatornationals March 16-18. PEAK reached out to fans across the nation for creative designs. William Codianni, 22 from San Diego, was selected from a group of finalist to have his “American Made” themed design adorn Force’s hot rod.

“There are no bigger American classics than the Chevrolet Camaro and John Force,” said Codianni. “I have so much pride in having my design a part of John Force and his Camaro Funny Car. What they both stand for as far as respect of the country and what the flag stands for is amazing.”

Codianni has attended about 20 races at Pomona but has never been to Gainesville. He will be taking his father with him to the Gatornationals as a thank you for taking him to his first NHRA national event in 2000.

One race left after Perth Summit Sportsman Series event

The stage is set for a monumental Grand Final later this month (Adelaide International Raceway, March 23-24) following the conclusion of the penultimate round of the 2017/2018 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series at the Perth Motorplex.

Hoisting ANDRA Christmas Trees on Sunday night, March 4, were Steph Gullotto (DENSO Super Street), Bryan Finn (Modified Bike), Martin Mirco (Super Sedan), Matt Czerny (Modified), Chris Theo (Top Sportsman), David Smith (Supercharged Outlaws) Jim Ioannidis (Super Stock), Ralph Lewis (Competition) and Wayne Patterson (Competition Bike).

Smith lived out the fairy-tale story as he drove his Dodge Stratus to victory in his first-ever competitive event.

“This is a pretty hard thing to comprehend, it seems surreal still and I am lost for words really. It is pretty incredible, but I guess you surround yourself with good people and the results show,” said Smith. “It is funny, because you always try and stay optimistic and stay positive and be confident, so we were saying all meeting ‘we are going to the finals, we are going to win it’, but not actually thinking we were going to win it – it is pretty cool, it is pretty special.

“We will take the car home now and regroup and get ready to bring it back out next season. We have a good base line now, so hopefully we will have half a shot of doing something.”

Matt Czerny also had a breakthrough day. He has led the Modified points for much of the season and came to the final round twice before, but had not won an event until this evening.

Yet another racer grinning ear to ear was Jim Ioannidis, who not only Top Qualified and took the Super Stock victory, but also reset the national C/MSA ET record at 9.555 seconds in the process.

New Product of the Day

Fulcrum Upgrade Kit for OEM LS Rockers from PRW

PRW Industries has developed a new fulcrum upgrade kit that will increase your factory rocker strength. They can handle even more when it comes to higher lift cams, performance valve springs, and higher RPMs. The fulcrum bearings on an OEM rocker are an open or “uncaptured” design. Though good for light performance, they can be the weak point in an otherwise robust rocker design. With performance modifications, the factory needle bearings can fail. This PRW kit replaces the original fulcrum unit with a new assembly with drawn cup bearings, circlips, and fasteners. PRW industries also offer a related removal and installation tool kit including an installation tool with a magnetic base. This combines with a steel driver and installation washers for removal and installation of replacement grunions without damaging the rockers.
